This past year has been a great year for 4-H! I have enjoyed serving as your Pitt County 4-H President. I have also enjoyed working with this year’s council and thank them for serving with me. I also want to thank Ms. Vanessa, Ms. Marian, and Ms. Carol for their guidance throughout the year. During the year, I have learned more about serving at the county level. I have been inspired to help others, encourage others, and appreciate 4-H even more. Thank you for a great year and I look forward to continuing serving our community through our 4-H clubs.

The West Virginia Exchange

Eight North Carolina 4-H members participated in an exchange camp in Taylor County, West Virginia. Jameson Bergstedt, Madison Bergstedt, Alex Pearson, Rachael Pearson, Amos Stead, Jonathan Stead, Aaron Vick and Issac Vick traveled with their 4-H leaders Tracy Stead and Sherry Vick to the camp.

The week long camp offered a variety of activities including cooking, crafts, archery, canoeing, and pellet gun shooting. The group especially enjoyed canoeing and archery practice.

Our hosts were very kind and gracious even when the North Carolina group won the archery contest. The West Virginia 4-H’ers were very interested in North Carolina 4-H and how our clubs differed.

The biggest difference in the 4-H programs involved the tradition of tribes. The West Virginia campers are divided into tribes which include the Mingo, Delaware, Seneca, and Cherokee. The campers are loyal to their tribe and compete to win a coveted spirit stick.

4-H HOSTS POLITICAL CANDIDATE MEET & GREET

Pitt County 4-H will hosts its 3rd annual Political Candidate Meet & Greet on Thursday, October 21st. The community is invited to attend and meet area candidates. The event will be held at the Pitt County Ag Center at 6:30pm. This is a great opportunity for youth to be involved in a citizenship event! Call the 4-H office if you have any questions, 902-1710.

Hello Pitt County 4-H!

I hope you are all off to a great school year! Here at the 4-H office, we are gearing up for the Fall and look forward to seeing you again. Please read through these important notes and share them with your fellow club members. Feel free to call/email the 4-H office with any questions.

1. All market goats/lambs/hogs have to have been tagged by Sept. 1st in order to compete at the state fair this year. This is a new requirement by the NCDA. I will have state fair books available at the end of this week for anyone who would like one. You can also find state fair information at http://www.ncstatefair.org/

2. Summer evaluations have been mailed to you. If you participated in some of our 4-H summer programs, please fill out the form and send it back to us.

3. 4-H End-of-Summer Picnic will be held on Sept. 9th at the 4-H Office. You should have already received information about the picnic. RSVP to Ms. Carol by Sept. 3rd if you are coming.

4. September 20th is the next County Council meeting. It will begin at 6:30pm. I believe Mrs Marian is still looking for a club to do the program &/or refreshments. Please let her know if you would like to do it.

5. Sept. 21st is the NED Horse Council meeting. Let Mrs. Vanessa know if you would like to attend.

6. Sept. 22nd is our Project Book Workshop. Come learn how to fill out a 4-H Project Record book & even have time to work on it. It will start at 3pm. Remember, project books are due on DECEMBER 1ST!!! (not 31st)

7. 4-H Volunteer Leader training is scheduled for Sept. 23rd. It will be offered once during the day and once in the evening. Let the 4-H office know if you, or someone you know, is interested in attending this training and becoming a 4-H volunteer leader. (this date is different from the original date of Sept. 16)

8. Political Candidate Meet & Greet hosted by Pitt County 4-H is scheduled for October 14th. We will be accepting teen 4-H leaders to serve on the planning committee for the event. Let Mrs. Vanessa know if you are interested in serving on this committee by Sept, 9th (date of our picnic). You must be at least 13 years old to participate.

9. Pitt County Fair is October 4-9th. Your 4-H leaders will be receiving information about putting up a fair booth very soon. Start thinking of ways to show off your 4-H club & tell others about 4-H.

and #10....National 4-H Week is October 3-9th. Let us know if you and/or your club does something great to showcase 4-H.

Rabbit and Poultry Shows

Pitt County will have both Poultry and Rabbit Shows at the Pitt County Fair this year, and all of you are invited to participate! This email contains the basic information of the shows. An informational meeting will be held on June 17th at 6:30pm.

Poultry Show
- Will be held on Monday, October 4th at 6pm
-Chicks must be bought from the 4-H program. Cost is $4 per chicken.
-Chicken pick-up is July 29th from 6-7pm
-Entry form is due Sept. 15th

Rabbit Show
-Will be held on Monday, October 4th following the Poultry Show which begins at 6pm
-Rabbits can be bought from the 4-H program at $15 per rabbit, OR participants can show their own.
-Rabbit pick-up is July 29th from 6-7pm
-Entry form is due Sept. 15th
-Rabbits can be kept or sold after the show

4-H things you need to know...

Hi guys! There are 3 important things that we need to let you know about.

1. The deadline to sign up for presentation times is this Friday, May 7th. You need to call and make an appointment for either Tuesday, May 11, or Wed., May 12th. I give out these times on a first-come-first-serve basis, so call today for a good time. The appointments are in 15 minute increments between 2pm and 7pm.

2. Pitt County 4-H will be starting a 4-H Shooting Sports program in June. We will have an information meeting on Tuesday, May 11th at 7pm. This meeting is for youth and parents who are interested in the 4-H Shooting sports program. Participants must be at least 9 years old. The first club meeting will be Wed., June 2nd. Please let me know if you are interested in attending.

3. Deadline for the ARIE program and Spring Ambassador portfolios is May 14th. Please get those in to the 4-H office by noon on the 14th!!!

All 4-H Volunteer Leaders are invited to join us on Friday, April 23rd at an event in your honor. We will be recognizing you for your service to Pitt County 4-H. We will also have a special guest speaker who will talk about the wonderful things to do in 4-H. All volunteers should RSVP to Carol by this Friday, April 16th. You are encouraged to bring a guest with you to the event. It will be from 6-7pm at the Ag Center.

This is a special event for volunteers and you are strongly encouraged to come & be recognized!

Now you have an exciting, new way to be a part of 4-H’s success! During the month of April, join 4-H’s Give2Vote Challenge by texting CLOVER to 50555 to give $10 in support of 4-H in your state. You can also take the Challenge by making a secure online donation at 4-H.org to benefit your state 4-H program.

When you give, you vote! Each $10 mobile gift or online donation counts as one “vote” towards your state. The state with the most “votes” at the end of the Challenge receives an additional $5,000. It’s that easy! Voting ends April 30th.

4-H Achievement Night a Success!

PITT COUNTY 4-H ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT, by Jennifer Stanley

Pitt County 4-H Achievement Night was a success. It took place on February 2, 2010. We were very pleased with the turnout and how well the evening went. Our staff was very happy with everyone who came out that night. This was an important event to show how well our 4-H’ers have been doing this past year. We shared a meal with our fellow guests to start the night off. Our County Council President for 2009, Ashten Bergstedt, did a great job starting the evening. The other county council officers, Meagan Briley, Alexis Briley, and Catherine Wills helped to open the program. The 4-H’ers of Pitt County have truly gone above and beyond this past year. Many awards were given out on Tuesday night to individuals in Pitt County 4-H.

Mrs. Vanessa Spiron spoke to the individuals and clubs who were presented with awards. Mrs. Marian Booth and Mr. Mitch Smith presented the individuals with the awards. We had several individuals who have won state level recognition in 2009. Our winners for these honors were as follows:

Our next award was the blue ribbon award, which is the club with the greatest number of blue ribbon project books. This year our club with the most blue ribbons was the Whiz Kidz 4-H Club.

The next event that took place was installing our 2010 County Council officers. Our new officers for 2010 are:

The evening was wrapped up by Mrs. Vanessa Spiron, Pitt County 4-H Extension Agent. She thanked everyone for coming and again congratulated the youth for a very successful year.

2009 is coming to a close and 2010 is around the corner. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of Pitt County 4-H this year. 4-H'ers, you have amazed the 4-H office with your outstanding projects & your desire to accomplish anything! Volunteer leaders, you are the heart of the 4-H program and you should be proud of what you have done! Parents & community supporters are also much appreciated during this holiday season. Thank you to everyone!

Upcoming 4-H Events...

WREATH ORDERS: This is just a reminder that this Thursday is the deadline for Christmas wreath orders! Each club has had the opportunity to sell wreaths during this past month and make $10 per wreath for your club.
Pickup for wreaths will be Wednesday, Dec. 2nd at the Pitt County Ag Center/4-H office (NOT the fairgrounds). All wreaths should be picked up by 5:30pm.

Veteran's Day Day Camp - Pitt County 4-H will be offering a DAY CAMP next Wednesday, Nov. 11th. Any youth between the ages of 7 and 13 can attend this camp for the low cost of $5. The Day Camp will be from 9am-3pm. Registration ends Monday! Call Ms. Carol at the 4-H office for registration information, 902-1710.

4-H Congress Recap

What a wonderful week we had at the NC 4-H Congress last week! Pitt County 4-H'ers traveled to NC State University for 5 days of competition, workshops, fellowship and fun. We all had a great time, but were ready for some rest after we left Raleigh.

The 4-H'ers who attended were: Macon Fields, Justin Lawrence, Dylan Letchworth, Meagan Briley, Alexis Briley, Jonathan Stead, Jordyn Moore, Rachael Pearson, Ashten Bergstedt, Madison Bergstedt, and Milo Lewis. The two adults who attended were Leigh Lawrence and Vanessa Spiron.

On Tuesday, July 21st, we all participated in the 4-H Centennial Homecoming event. Participants saw artifacts from past 4-H endeavors. Several inaugural members were inducted in the NC 4-H Hall of Fame. Representing Pitt County was Mr. Larry Dilda. Mr. Dilda was an extraordinary 4-H'er in the 1940's. Following these festivities, we had a Centennial banquet in which over 1600 people attended. The night's events were concluded with the Rockin' 4-H Clover Dance.

In addition, to the Centennial events, Pitt County 4-H'ers also were recognized for various things throughout the evening. One 4-H'er, Milo Lewis served as an organizer and host for this event by being the NC 4-H State Vice-President. Another 4-H'ers, Alexis Briley, was inducted as the Northeast District Council President for 2009-2010. Other winners were as follows:

4-H Summer

Pitt County 4-H is definitely making it a 4-H Summer! We have had so much going on. Our summer fun day camps have been a hit. So far, we have had Egg Hatching, Kayaking, Farm Tours, Sewing, Butterfly Camp, It's all about Presentation & more! We still have some great ones left! However, most of our classes are full. If you're interested in any of the classes we have left, give Mrs. Carol a call to see if there is room.

This summer we've also had lots of fun with Presentations. Pitt County's 4-H Presentations this year have been amazing! We had 19 people compete at District Activity Day and EVERYONE received a medal. Great work guys! We have several that will compete at state competition next week: Jameson Bergstedt, Jonathan Stead, Ashten Bergstedt, Madison Bergstedt, Alexis Briley, Kyra Miles, Meagan Briley, Justin Lawrence, and Garrett Fagundus. Good luck to everyone!

Four Pitt County 4-H'ers attended the NC Citizenship Focus conference in Raleigh in June. They were Alexis Briley, Ashten Bergstedt, Meagan Briley, Madison Bergstedt. These four ladies will work on an action plan to better our community!

We also had a great time at the Northeast District 4-H Science Camp at NC Weslyan. The 4-H'ers who attended that were Sam Christensen, Jameson Bergstedt, Rachael Pearson, Ana Ramirez, Amos Stead, Jonathan Stead, Aaron Vick, and Eric Ramirez. They learned about Space Exploration and Biotechnology.

This is just a reminder of some upcoming events & deadlines for 4-H...

...4-H Family Fun Day/Fundraising Meeting this Thursday! On March 26th at 6:30pm, the entire committee will meet to discuss this upcoming event. EACH club should have at least 1 designated representative present (youth or adult), but anyone who wants to be involved with the event planning is invited to attend. The more the merrier! If you are unable to come, but are on the committee, please let me know.

...Fashion & Talent entry forms are available and are due by April 7th. The Show will be on Apirl 16th at 7pm.

...Presentation Workshop is next Monday, March 30th. Please call Ms. Carol to sign up by Friday. After the workshop, we will have a working session for 4-H'ers to work on their presentations. So even if you are experienced, and do not need to come to the workshop, you are welcome to come afterwards to work on your presentations (topic development, speech writing, posters, etc.). Between 11:30 and 3:30pm. Marian and Vanessa will be here to help!

4-H Achievement Night

On February 12, Pitt County 4-H held its annual Achievement Night, where awards were given for the accomplishments of 2008, and new officers were elected for 2009. The Cooperative Extension staff were recognized, and included: Mitch Smith, Pitt County Extension Director; Phillip Rowan, Livestock Extension Agent; Vanessa Spiron, 4-H Agent; Carol Haywood, 4-H Secretary; Marian Booth 4-H Program Associate; and Christian Hardy and Lauren Bowman, ECU interns. Also in attendance was Melvin McLawhorn, Pitt County Commissioner.

The 2008 Community Service Award was given to the Whiz Kidz 4-H Club, who focused on feeding the hungry and promoting awareness. Their book and video will be submitted to state level judging. The Whiz Kidz Club also won the Blue Ribbon Award, meaning that their club received the most blue ribbons for submitting their project books.

Nineteen 4-H’ers were recognized for giving presentations: Bethany Dunham, Maggie Williams, Erika Letchworth, Dustin Cannon, Cody Cannon, Emma Christensen, Hannah Keene, Bridget Demery, Jordyn Moore, Jordan Daigle, Ella Roberson, Nathan Moore, Samantha Long, Cole Sutton, Alexis Briley, Jameson Bergstedt, Dylan Letchworth, Meagan Briley, and Catherine Wills. The 3 state medalists were Ashten Bergstedt, Sam Christensen, and Madison Bergstedt.

In 2008, fifteen project books were sent to District competition. 4-H’ers who sent in one book to district include: Samantha Long, Nathan Allan, Jonathan Stead, Jordan Daigle, Timothy Velarde, Hannah Daigle, Brittany Powell, Rebecca Velarde, and Catherine Wills. Those who sent two project books to District include: Meagan Briley, Jordyn Moore, Hannah Keene, Ashten Bergstedt, Kerri Briley, Alexis Briley, Ella Roberson, Nathan Moore, Sam Christensen, Madison Bergstedt, and Rachael Pearson.

For Achievement Plans, 4-H’ers must complete a series of activities in order to accomplish each level. In the five to six-year-old Cloverbud Level, Sarah Cooke was recognized. In the Green Level, Hannah Cooke was recognized. The Bronze Level Certificates were given to the following: Ashten Bergstedt, Hannah Keene, Nathan Moore, Aaron Vick, Jameson Bergstedt, Madison Bergstedt, Jonathan Stead, and Amos Stead. The Silver Level Certificates were given to Catherine Wills and Jordyn Moore.

County Council is Monday night. The 4-H County Council will meet on Monday, Nov. 17th at 6:30pm at the Ag Center. All 4-H'ers are invited to attend and all clubs are asked to have at least 2 representatives present. The Whiz Kidz 4-H Club will be doing the program and the Outdoorsmen 4-H Club will be doing the refreshments.

Gifts & Goodies Workshop! On Saturday, December 13th we will be holding a "gifts & goodies" workshop for 4-H members. 4-H'ers will be coming and making gifts to take home with them. We'll even learn how to make bread from a couple of real-life bread makers! The class is from 9am-12pm, and there is no cost. Please call Ms. Carol by December 9th to reserve your spot! There will be a Leader's Holiday event during the same time.

4-H Leaders....are invited to a Holiday event just for YOU! The gathering will be during the "gifts & goodies" workshop on Dec. 13th. During this time, you'll have a chance to talk with other 4-H leaders about what they are doing and get to know each other a little more. We'll also be holding some "personal development" classes during this time to enhance your abilities as a 4-H Club Leader and as a person. This will be a great experience for us all, so please come. (It will also count toward your 1 training each leader must attend during the year to retain your club charter.) Call Ms. Carol to reserve your spot!

The Nutcracker Ballet...what a treat this will be for selected 4-H'ers. Pitt County 4-H has recieved a few FREE tickets to the Nutcracker on December 23rd. We will take a van load to Raleigh to see this amazing ballet. The show is at 12pm on Dec. 23rd. If you're interested, call the 4-H office to reserve your seat on the van. We will also need a volunteer driver if anyone is able to help...

4-H Day during Teacher Work Day!

4-H is offering a Day Camp THIS Monday, Oct. 27th to all youth 6-12 years old. Student groups from ECU will be teaching the classes. The classes will focus on the many years of 4-H & what the world was like during each decade. The activities will be hands-on and each child will leave with stuff they have made. This will be a very exciting day! The camp will be from 8am until 3:30pm, with lunch included. The cost is only $3 and pre-registration is required. Call or email today for more information or just come by to sign up. Limited to 25, but we need a few more to make the class fun for us all! Please come if you can make it.

Political Candidate Meet & Greet

On October 7th, Pitt County 4-H will host a political candidate Meet & Greet and the public is invited. This Meet & Greet will give citizens a chance to meet area candidates that will be on the November ballot. Other local officials will also be in attendance.

During the Meet & Greet, candidates will be able to introduce themselves. 4-H'ers will also ask the candidates questions relating to youth issues. The Meet & Greet is at the Pitt County Ag Center Auditorium from 6-9pm, with introductions starting at 7pm. Refreshments will be served to those in attendance.

Together at the Fair!

The Pitt County Fair is here! The fair starts September 29th and ends October 4th. 4-H will be at the fair all week, so please come by and see us. Several clubs will be at the 4-H booth throughout the week to answer questions. 4-H'ers will also be participating in livestock shows and other events throughout the week. So, come on out and let's be..."Together at the Fair!"

4-H Congress!!!!

State 4-H Congress was a BLAST! The 7 of us who attended had a wonderful time with classes, presentations, elections, free time, and the kick off of the 4-H Centennial. Milo Lewis, a long-time Pitt County 4-H'er was elected the State 4-H Vice President for the upcoming year. We also had presentation winners: Sam Christensen, silver medal, Ashten Bergstedt, silver medal, and Madison Bergstedt, bronze medal. Pitt County was called out severl times during the State Theme Assembly with Rachael Pearson, Aaron Vick, and the Whiz Kidz 4-H Club winning awards. The Whiz Kidz also received the Community Service Award for the Northeast District. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!!!!!

Thanks to everyone who attended Congress. We had a great time. Catherine Wills, Meagan Briley, Bridget Demery, Alexis Briley, Sam Christensen, Milo Lewis & myself had a memorable time at 4-H Congress this year. With the dances, meetings, classes, and staying at NCSU, it was a time we won't forget.

We hope to have more attend with us next year. Remember, any 4-H'er 12 and older can attend Congress. And, don't forget that 4-H Bucks apply to Congress, and those competing in State Presentation Finals receives scholarships.

District Activity Day

District Activity Day was held on June 24th in Northampton County. We had several 4-H'ers, parents, family members and friends attend the event. During DAD, 14 Pitt County 4-H'ers competed in District Level presentations and 2 4-H'ers participated in the Talent Showcase. We were so proud of the wonderful job everyone did. District Activity Day is a great event for all 4-H'ers to be a part of during their 4-H careers. I encourage EVERYONE to do presentations and go to District Acitivity Day to find out what all the fun is about.

Welcome to April! Doesn't it seem like March just flew by?
Four-H stayed busy during March (like we do most times of the year). We had a Spring Day Camp, Livestock Shows, Presentation class, County Council, and so much more. Hi Guys! I know you've received your 4-H Calendars, but I wanted to remind you about a few that are right around the corner.

The first one is our Livestock Academy. It will meet Friday, Feb. 29th from 2:30-5pm. Any 4-H'ers 9 and older are invited to come and learn about the topic of the day...Beef Cattle!

District Teen Retreat for the Northeast District will be held March 7-9. Those registered are eligible to attend.

County Council is March 17th! Everyone is invited to come out and see what's going on in Pitt County 4-H. Be sure to wear your green!

March 22nd is the Pitt County Livestock Show.
